Book Reviews

Reading is often more than a passion for me.  Sometimes it can be an obsession.  I read for pleasure, escape, education, and well, any reason really.  Here are some of my favorite books and latest readings along with my thoughts about them.

Discipline without Distress is a book that advocates discipline through teaching, and that it can and should be done without spanking, time-outs, punishments or bribery.  I have to admit that I need this and while some of it seems over the top (like letting her 10 year old daughter throw trash all over in the van because she was upset about not being allowed to have a sleep over) I would like to implement more of what she mentions.  I'm currently in the practical tips and think I'm going to copy them down and put them on my fridge so I have them at the ready for in-the-moment meltdowns.

Last Child in the Woods is a book about how nature (or the lack thereof) affects children and adults in today's society.  Its got a great premis and the facts are astounding.  Some parts were better than others.  For instance, I had to force myself through the parts about school reform, as its just not relevant to us yet.  But other parts were great and I've definitely put more effort into getting my boys outside than before.  I can certainly tell a difference when I do versus when I don't.  I'm sure I'll be checking this book out again as they get older and things change and I need to remind myself why outdoor play is important.

Simplicity Parenting is my all time favorite parenting book.  I've read it several times and while I'm not currently reading it, I had to put it in here because it really is that good.  Its book I've already gone back to several times.  It encompasses everything I feel about parenting and it helps me feel grounded when I loose my way as Mama.  It also confirms that I'm doing what is best for my family.

It talks of using less to bring peace and freedom to your family.  Less stuff, less hectic scheduling, less TV and access to adult worries.  Less... you get the idea.  Its a wonderful book and I'm certainly not doing it justice.  Get it.  Read it.
